Beyond the Mutt
For more than 15 years, the TurfMutt Foundation has been an advocate for the green spaces you manage and care for: backyards, corporate campuses, and community parks. Through education, partnerships, and real-world projects, the Foundation works to raise the value people place on professionally managed landscapes, and on the industry behind them.
Here is what that support looks like in practice.
Five ways TurfMutt works for you
- Community at Equip Exposition. Mulligan's Mutt Madness and the Mulligan's 5K Fun Run & Walk connect attendees every year, and Mutt Madness has placed nearly 100 shelter pets with Equip families through the Kentucky Humane Society.
- A spokesdog the public already knows. Mulligan the TurfMutt, adopted by Foundation President and CEO Kris Kiser at the 2019 Mutt Madness, turns environmental science into positive, accessible messages on CBS's Lucky Dog and Mission Unstoppable.
- Proof that landscapes transform communities. The TurfMutt Great Lawn in Louisville turned an industrial site into a vibrant public hub. "The best community amenity out there is green space," says Kiser.
- National demand for backyarding. TV and radio appearances champion moving everyday life outside (dining, entertaining, even working), building demand for the outdoor living spaces landscapers and contractors create.
- Tomorrow's clients. The free TurfMutt curriculum at TurfMutt.com teaches kids to appreciate and care for green spaces, one yard and park at a time.
The values behind the work
Everything above flows from five core values the Foundation shares with the pros who build and maintain green spaces:
- Curiosity. Sparking wonder about the outdoors creates future clients and advocates.
- Environmental education. Informed clients make smarter, more sustainable choices.
- Responsibility. Landscapers are environmental stewards; the Foundation helps the public see it.
- Inclusivity. Everyone is welcome in the movement for a greener world, which means a wider client base for you.
- Positivity. Optimism counters negative narratives about landscaping and secures the industry's future.
